There is no particular list for compatible Processors. The Notebook uses the GT320M Chipset Motherboard and it should support the I7-840QM Processor

HP does not recommend upgrading the Motherboard or Processor since those parts are Non Customer Accessible parts

Thank you

Welcome to HP Support Community

As per the Service Manual the HP Pavilion DV7 Entertainment has been tested with I7-820QM and i7-720QM Processors

Since it can support i7-820QM it should also support I7-840QM.Processors. Please note that HP does not recommend upgrading parts like Processor & Motherboard, you can do so at your own discretion

Thank you and have a great day 😊
