According to the official specifications of the HP Laptop 14-cf2112wm (5T9T7UA), it has one memory slot that can support a maximum of 8GB DDR4-2400 SDRAM  . The laptop comes with 4GB DDR4-2400 SDRAM pre-installed in the memory slot .

Can I upgrade the memory by replacing the pre-installed 4GB RAM with an 8GB DDR4-3200 SDRAM.

I can purchase compatible RAM from Crucial . The following RAM modules are supposedly both compatible with this laptop:

DDR4-3200 sounds like an improvement over DDR4-2400, same price.

But Crucial also lists a DDR5 option (which I do not think will physically fit).

Hi:

Yes, you can replace the DDR4-2400 4 GB memory chip with a DDR4-3200 GHz memory chip, and it will automatically bridge to 2400 MHz.  It will not run at 3200 MHz.

There would be no advantage to installing the 3200 MHz chip over the DDR4-2400 one, and if that is what HP installed, you should probably go with the DDR4-2400 chip.

You are correct.  If the notebook came with DDR4 memory, DDR5 memory will not fit in the slot.
