I have a laptop HP Pavilion g6-2160sr:
- Processor: Intel Core i3 2350M (2300 MHz)
- Graphics: Intel(R) HD Graphics 3000
- Mainboard chipset: Sandy Bridge - HM76
I want to upgrade the processor from Intel Core i3 2350M to Intel Core i7-2640M (This is the best processor for this laptop with TDP 35W. The next processor is already with TDP 45W and I'm not sure it is good for my laptop )
In some articles, I found that it is possible because processors are similar
But it is probably possible because of chipset version
Does someone know for sure is it possible to change Intel Core i3 2350M to Intel Core i7-2640M in my laptop HP Pavilion g6-2160sr with chipset HM76?

Hi:
Below is the link to the service manual for your notebook.
http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c03345657
According to chapter 1, you can install the Intel Core i7-3612QM processor (2.1 GHz, SC turbo up to 3.1 GHz, 6 MB L3 cache),Quad 35 W
The manual does not show the i7-2640M as a supported processor.
Just make sure you get the FCPGA988 processor.
Here is a comparison of the two processors...

Got it
But in comparison table processors have different Sockets
Or FCPGA988 equals PPGA988?
And I also found that it is Ivi Bridge. Will it be compatible with my sandy bridge chipset?

Hi:
The manual indicates your notebook has an Ivy Bridge chipset.
Your specific model has a Sandy Bridge processor in it.
You can run the free utility that I zipped up and attached below to confirm what chipset your notebook has.
I believe the FCPGA988 socket is the same as PPGA988 socket.
FC stands for "flip-chip.". PGA988 is the same as FCPGA988, the FC is often just left off.
