Hp zbook x2
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello, is it possible to upgrade the ram and ssd of the HP zbook x2 and are there any video resources showing how you could do this? The manual is not as clear and I am afraid of breaking any components

Hi,

The max RAM is 32GB of DDR4-2133Mhz RAM (2x16GB)

You can use 2400Mhz modules which will run at 2133Mhz

You can upgrade the M2 SSD to your preferred capacity using either M2 SATA3 or much faster M2 PCIe NVMe drive.

Here is the service manual where you can see the steps to upgrade. RAM page 53 and SSD page 54)

http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c06111498

You can also take a look at these HP videos and follow each step by clicking the step needed in list on left.

It is not the easiest PC to upgrade as you need to remove display assembly, motherboard etc...

Let me know if you need further help,

David

In case anyone lands here and wonders, here is an official answer from HP:

Spoiler

"Upgrading your laptop does not void  your warranty.

You can Upgrade/Replace your HDD/SSD, Memory, WiFi etc without voiding your warranty.

But during the Upgrade/Replace if you damage something, that is not covered under your warranty.

Meaning if you break it you pay for it.

Anything Upgraded/Replaced is not covered under your warranty only the original hardware."

https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Hardware-and-Upgrade-Questions/RAM-upgrade-and-warranty/m-p/7...

In other words: Know what you  are doing, and be careful with the display connector! (...and all the other little brittle ribbon cables inside). If you don't know what you are doing, pay someone who does to do the upgrade (or get HP to do it). The inner workings of modern notebooks, especially 2-in-1s, are very delicate, and many parts are extremely static sensitive. The money you spend having someone upgrade the machine for you will be worth the down-time and headache of having to replace a display connector, or to buy another pair of RAM cards (cheap nowadays, but not that cheap).

Aside:

Frankly, as someone who has spend decades in IT, I prefer to work on smartphones over notebooks nowadays. Everything is smaller, but it is designed to be a bit more durable.

Thanks a bunch for the service manual! I'm still not used to a hardware company being so forthcoming with documentation (I'm a new convert from Samsung...don't get me started 🙄). I wonder if you might have updated links to the videos. Those are resolving to a 404 now. I can start a new thread if I don't get a response here (yeah, I know...🤓😉) but I thought it might benefit others who land here..
