Hi,

What options are available to increase storage on my system using SSD technology?

I'm pretty sure that my notebook has a gum stick SSD, WDC PC SN520 SDAPNUW-256G-1006.

So I'm contemplating getting either a 1TB replacement NVMe or possibly adding on a SATA SSD either 500 GB or 1TB.

Would I need to get the SATA SSD bracket and drive cabling?  I have not yet opened the notebook to see what is available.

I;'ve read other forum posts that specifies that the factor needs to be 2.5, 7mm.  Is that also true for my notebook?

Thanks,

Zy_Coder

@Zy_Coder

Device manager should tell you what it is, for example on my machine which has Toshiba M.2 SSD:

Since your machine is a CTO machine therefore we don't know its specs. From your information, it has 256GB M.2 NVMe SSD from Western Digital. You can upgrade to larger (capacity) using WDC or

        https://www.crucial.com/products/ssd/crucial-p2-ssd
  Or similar from reputable vendors.

If you wish to add 2.5" HDD/SSD you can use

          https://www.samsung.com/semiconductor/minisite/ssd/product/consumer/860evo/
     Or similar from reputable vendors.

Note: You need more part for 2.5" HDD/SSD such as Hard drive cover part # L22534-001

Regards.

To add to the answer above...

"I've read other forum posts that specifies that the factor needs to be 2.5, 7mm. Is that also true for my notebook?"

You can use a 2.5 inch 7mm up to 9.5mm drive. Most of HPs laptops come with the HDD brackets (cover) and harness installed. But its a good idea to open the case and look. It might be there, it might not.

Hi Banhien,

Appreciate your guidance and assistance!

With pricing of SSD and NvME being similar, performance and reliability wise wouldn't going with the NvME factor be the better path?

Currently, I've used half of the 250GB, and don't think I'll be consuming much more of the HD space, but wanted to look into options for the future.

Would you know what would be a simple way to install the upgrade and also to clone the OS from the existing NvME?  Thinking maybe an external HD using the Samsung's Magician sw to clone?

Thank you,
