Hello,

My HP pavilion USB-C port doesn't work as a display port to connect a dockingstation or a screen.

Is it possible to upgrade my USB-C port, or is it a grafics card issue?

Hopefully we can come to a conclusion without buying a new laptop.

I will gladly hear your suggestions.

Hi @Niels27,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your HP Pavilion laptop’s USB-C port does not support display output when connecting to a docking station or external monitor. Let’s go through a few steps to check what could be causing this and whether it can be changed.

Check USB-C port capabilities
Not all USB-C ports support video output (DisplayPort Alt Mode).
Review your exact HP Pavilion model specifications to confirm whether “DisplayPort over USB-C” is listed.

Understand that USB-C ports cannot be upgraded
USB-C display support is a hardware-level feature built into the motherboard.
If the port was designed for data and charging only, it cannot be upgraded by software or parts.

Verify graphics hardware support
Even with USB-C DisplayPort support, the graphics chipset must also support external displays through USB-C.
Integrated graphics limitations can prevent video output on certain Pavilion models.

Test with a known-compatible USB-C cable or dock
Make sure the cable or docking station explicitly supports DisplayPort Alt Mode.
Charging-only or data-only USB-C cables will not transmit video.

Update graphics and chipset drivers
Install the latest graphics and chipset drivers for your laptop model from HP’s support site.
Outdated drivers can prevent external display detection even when hardware supports it.

Check BIOS settings and version
Enter the BIOS and confirm no USB-C or external display options are disabled.
Update the BIOS if a newer version is available for your model.

Test alternative display outputs
Try HDMI or Mini DisplayPort (if available) to confirm the graphics card can drive an external display.
This helps rule out a broader graphics hardware issue.

Consider a USB graphics adapter as a workaround
A USB-A or USB-C DisplayLink adapter can provide external display output without native USB-C video support.
This works independently of the laptop’s USB-C display capability.

In summary, if your HP Pavilion’s USB-C port does not support DisplayPort Alt Mode, it cannot be upgraded to do so. However, driver updates, correct cables, or a USB graphics adapter can often provide a practical solution without replacing the laptop.

I hope this helps.

Thanks for the quick and thorough reply!

Do you have any recommendations about a usb-c displaylink adapter? I would like to link 2 screens via this methode. Is there an option so i can link 2 screens with one cable, or do i need to use 2 cables? 1 with HDMI and 1 with the adapter?

Thanks in advance!

Hi @Niels27,

You’re welcome, happy to clarify this for you.

Yes, DisplayLink is the right workaround when a USB-C port does not support native video (DisplayPort Alt Mode), and you can drive two external monitors using a single USB cable, depending on the adapter or dock you choose.

Here’s how it works and what to look for:

Using one cable for two screens

A DisplayLink USB dock (USB-C or USB-A) can connect to your laptop with one cable and then provide two video outputs (for example, HDMI + HDMI, or HDMI + DisplayPort).

The dock itself handles the graphics over USB, so your laptop’s USB-C port does not need display support.

You do not need to run one monitor on HDMI and another separately if you use a dual-output DisplayLink dock.

What to look for in a DisplayLink adapter or dock

It must explicitly say “DisplayLink” (this is different from “USB-C Alt Mode”).

Look for dual-display support such as:

2× HDMI

HDMI + DisplayPort

Confirm support for your target resolution (for example, 2× 1080p or 2× 1440p).

Typical and reliable setup

One USB-C (or USB-A) cable from the laptop to the DisplayLink dock

Two monitor cables from the dock to your screens

DisplayLink driver installed in Windows (required)

Performance expectations (important)

DisplayLink works very well for:

Office work

Web browsing

Coding

Video playback

It is not ideal for gaming or high-FPS workloads, since it uses USB and compression.

USB-C vs USB-A

If your USB-C port is data-only, a USB-A DisplayLink dock works just as well.

USB-C DisplayLink docks are more about convenience and power delivery, not video capability.

Summary

Yes, you can connect two monitors with one cable using a dual-output DisplayLink dock

No, the USB-C port itself cannot be upgraded to support video

DisplayLink avoids the need for using HDMI + a second cable

This is the cleanest solution without replacing the laptop

I hope this helps.
