HP ProBook 470 G1 Notebook PC

Hi,

what does it take to make my laptop compatible with more modern processors?

This is the last dumb idea before I order an Intel Core i7-4712MQ from ebay 😄 which is one of the last places to get the recommended replacements for my current i5-4200M in HP ProBook 470 G1. Initially a serviceman persuaded me that no upgrade is possible, because it's soldered into motherboard. And here I am now unplugging it from its FCPGA946 socket, reading about people overcoming limitations of their laptops. It was fun disassembling and learning all this, but I had to ask this last part.

So: How to make this probook withstand >37W TDP? Would a more efficient heatsink work and fit? And what about getting another socket type or DDR4 or higher? Is anything else required?

If it's not possible to upgrade that much, I'll stick to that 4712MQ and perhaps buy another DDR3 RAM (for dual channel, identical to what I have now).

One way he was right , depending on the existing discrete GPU on your machine as mentioned on page 60 of the manual. If you wish to replace processor, you can use the list on page 69 (the top one is 4702MQ, 2.2-GHz processor with 6-MB L3 cache part # 723522-001).

Motherboard won't support DDR4 RAM, even DDR4 RAM won't fit physically.

Thanks for bringing the manual up @Banhien . I couldnt find how it depends on the GPU though. I have the 2GB version.

Anyway, why 4712MQ isnt suggested in the manual? The only difference I can see is +0.1 GHz frequency and missing DDR3-1600 support. But DDR3L-1600 is supported, which is the case of this probook (see page 41 of the manual)... Sure, we cant expect DDR4 on this motherboard 🙂 ...

And should I worry about the note "(includes thermal grease)" missing in the i7 line, page 69 ?

Still, is there no way to improve cooling, so that it endures 47 or 57 W?
