I have to replace my 5400rpm HD and thinking of replacing with a 7200rpm drive ( ie Western Digital 1TB Black Series 2.5" HDD WD10JPLX for example)  all other specs would be same other than cache size.

Is there any possible problem doing this.

Bigger cache size and faster RPM will give better performance BUT anll standard HDD's now won't pass SSD's interms of speed.

My suggestion: go for 1TB 2.5" standard SSD. SSD's are very cheap now and price/performace worths every cent.

I a previous post I queried the purpose of my small SSD that appears as a 2.8gb drive in Disk Manager.   I was told it was used by  IRST as an acceleration cache.   And IRST interface reveals it as 22gb.

I only knew my HD was failing when  I ran the IRST and the startus reported SATA was failing DST,

Part of the converstaion was the question,  can I replacethis SSSD with a larger SSD and install the OS on it.

Apparently I can install a larger SSD drive but have to remove the SATA drive as only one drive was allowed.

Can you clarify.

Do I replace SATA and leave orginal IRST SSD in place

or

Do I replace the IRST SSD with the 1TB SSD and disable IRST acceleration and install OS.

or

Do I replace the IRST SSD with the 1TB SSD and disable IRST acceleration and install OS

AND can  also have a SATA drive for additional storage

Appreciate any insights

This is HP Pavillion 14-n073ca  E8A57UA#ABL

After further digging appears sensible options are

Replace SATA with equivalent SSD and leave M2 ssd installed and IRST acceleration on
BUT since both drives have same xfr rate I do not think I gain anything from having a second cache. Am I wrong?

ALSO Current SATA is 9.5mm SSD replacements that I have looked at are 7.0mm does this represent a problem.

Assuming I no longer need the M2 SSD for caching then perhaps my best bet is to Replace the 22GB M2 SSD with a 1TB SSD and optionaly add a second standard SATA drive for bulk storage.

Any comments appreciated!
