Greetings!

I am a do it yourself-er when it comes to computer upgrades and I want to install a 1TB SSD in this laptop. As far as I can tell it is an M.2 SSD with SATA-3 interface, 2280 format. Does anyone know if this is possible? Will the BIOS support it? I appreciate any feedback on this topic.

Hi,

Yes, you can upgrade the M2 SATA3 SSD to a higher capacity one such as the M2 Samsung 860 Evo or similar. There is no limit to capacity.

On page 30-31 of service manual, you can see the steps to replace the drive.

hope it helps,

David - thanks for your help! I was able to install the Mushkin (MKNSSDSR1TB-D8) from Amazon. The BIOS picked it right up and Windows restore boot USB stick recognized it and formatted it. I am not done yet with the install but so far so good. I will post more later.

Great. Once installed I recommend completely updating the OS. You can follow this process by going into settings > Update and Security > Click on "verify for updates". Let all updates install, you might need to reboot a couple of times. This will also install all or most drivers.

Next, you can install HP support assistant which will help in updating all HP drivers and much more. Here you can get the latest version:

https://www8.hp.com/us/en/campaigns/hpsupportassistant/hpsupport.html

Use it to completely update the PC.

You can also get any missing drivers and software for the notebook here:

Let me know how it works out,

David

Hi David -

I hit a snag. The HP recovery media that I created before changing the SSD creates the same partition structure on the new SSD so I have a C partition, a small recovery partition and another partition and the remaining space after those three. Windows 10 will not let me extend the C partition into the ~900GB+ remaining space. I was hoping to have just one big C partition and put everything on it. Is this not recommended?

Update -

The recovery installation did use almost the entire 1TB SSD for a C partition. It left about 1 Gb for a recovery partition which is no big deal. I am downloading and installing all the drivers and updates that you mentioned.

Thanks again David for all your help!
