Can I upgrade my original non backlit keyboard to a backlit one? Or would a backlit keyboard replacement be useless since the original isn't backlit?

Has anyone with HP 15s EQ 1117 AU upgraded from non backlit to backlit?

Welcome to the HP Community --

Yes, a backlit keyboard is an option on this series.

The top cover with keyboard remains after removing all other spare parts from the computer.

This means the keyboard can indeed be replaced -- it also means that you must essentially disassemble the computer to change out the keyboard.

Yes, there are videos showing how to complete the task.

In my opinion, this is not a task for a novice or first timer.

Yes, I'm sure someone has done this.

It's a lot of work.

In my opinion, you'll want to search for a competent tech to complete the task.

Check whether the tech guarantees their work -- you know, "just in case".

One more consideration - Might be Important to you...

Backlit keyboards for consumer grade computers -- of which your computer is one -- do not generally include a method to set the back light to "never off".  Your computer does not include a "Never Off" timeout option.

What?!

The lack of the timeout control to keep the backlight always ON means the backlit keyboard will go off every 15-30 seconds.  You have to keep typing or click any key to turn the back light back "ON".  15-30 seconds later, the keyboard will once again go OFF.

Some people are willing to live with the limitation and some people scream, kick, and yell about the limitation.   (Sometimes these folks yell about it here in the Community.)

What to do?

Purchase a brand of consumer grade computer that lets you keep the back light all the time OR purchase an HP business / commercial grade computer that includes access to the BIOS Advanced setting for the keyboard timeout you want.
