I have a Hp 15-BS638TU laptop which is at max 1.2 years old. It has 4Gb RAM, 1TB HDD and Intel HD620 graphics, Intel Core i3 7th Gen processor with speed of 2.7Ghz. The most inherent problem is laptop is slow for 10 minutes after booting and then it starts to operate normally. Now while working on a Machine Learning project I encountered a 5 Gb dataset, since I have only 4gb ram, I am planning to replace the RAM with 16gb and the HDD with 500 gb SSD to make it fast. So my question is would be helpful to invest so much in upgrading the laptop or I should consider buying a new one.

Thank you for posting your query on HP Community,
In order to check the compatibility, I would recommend you go through the Maintenance and service guide of your notebook. Here you will have the list of parts which have been tested and compatible on your notebook.
For the Memory upgrade, please note it shows Two non-customer-accessible/upgradable memory module slots (Intel Core processors) However, you can upgrade up to 16 GB.
Next thing regarding the SSD upgrade. There is a M.2 slot available for SSD. Your PC does support dual storage configuration
256 GB Value SSD + 1 TB HDD (OR) 128 GB Value SSD + 1 TB HDD
Please find the configurations in Chapter 1. page number 2.
For the part information, please go to Chapter 1. Product description - Page number 2 & 3.
For the spare part number, please go to Chapter 3. Illustrated parts catalog - Page number 18, & 19.
Next thing regarding slow startup, I would suggest here is to reduce the timeout from 30 seconds to 3 seconds - Please follow the instructions here:
Press the Windows key + R - In the Open the command type in - msconfig and then click on OK - On the Boot Menu - on the right corner reduce the timeout from 30 seconds to 3 seconds click on Apply and OK.
Next thing, I would suggest here is to do a clean boot, please follow the steps here:
- From Start, search for msconfig.
- Select System Configuration from the search results.
- On the Services tab of the System Configuration dialog box, tap or click to select the Hide all Microsoft services check box, and then tap or click Disable all.
- On the Startup tab of the System Configuration dialog box, tap or click Open Task Manager.
- On the Startup tab in Task Manager, for each startup item, select the item and then click Disable.
- Close Task Manager.
- On the Startup tab of the System Configuration dialog box, tap or click OK, and then restart the computer.
I would suggest please update the BIOS and Chipset drivers on your PC from our HP support website, using this link.
For more assistance, please follow all the steps suggested in the support document for - HP PCs - Improving PC Performance (Windows 10)
Hope this answers your question.
Good luck and keep me posted about the developments. If this helps, please mark this as “Accepted Solution” as it will help several others with the same issue and give the post a Kudos for my efforts to help. Thank you and have a great week ahead. 🙂
