Hello, I am looking to upgrade my HP Notebook - 15-ac143wm that currently has 6GB DDR3 of memory.
I'm wondering if I can use 8GB DDR3L memory with the 4GB DDR3 that is already in one slot?

8 gigs in one slot will be better than a 4 gig + a 2 gig.
Post back with any more questions and please accept as solution if its the info you needed.

Yes the maximum is 2 x 8 = 16 gigs. You may find that performace is actually better or at least as good at lower cost if you ditch the 2 gig module and go with a matched pair of 4 gig modules for dual channel operation. In many cases 8 gigs in dual channel will perform better than 12 gigs in single channel.

I see. Though, if I do happen to get an 8GB stick, will performance increase or decrease if I insert it in only one slot while the other is empty?
(I am considering to get an 8GB stick rather than 4GB because I am planning to get another 8GB stick in the future)
