Hi all, I'm looking to improve my computer speed for school. I run CAD programs on my laptop and it's just too slow sometimes. I've done some research, however, I'm no pro and I don't want to make things worse.

My computer information is the following...

Device name LAPTOP-E1O6VDFU
Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-7200U CPU @ 2.50GHz 2.70 GHz
Installed RAM 8.00 GB
System type 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor

Windows 10 Pro

I was looking at my manual and it states the following "DDR4-2133 dual channel support (DDR4-2400 bridge to DDR4-2133)".

Does this mean I need to install two different products? I opened up my laptop and currently it has 8GB 2666V.  I was looking on amazon and found the following..

MICRON 8GB SO-DIMM 1Rx8 DDR4 PC4-21300 2666MHz Memory Module MTA8ATF1G64HZ-2G6H1 at Amazon.com

I would like to make sure I am buying the right product.

Thank you!

Hi, @mwillup

The Micron DDR4-2666 MHz memory module you posted should work.

When you install memory in matching capacities (2 x 8 GB), it should run in dual channel mode.

This memory chip should also work for your notebook, and it costs less.

Crucial 8GB DDR4-2666 SODIMM | CT8G4SFRA266 | Crucial.com

Crucial memory is the retail division of Micron.

If your notebook doesn't have a discrete AMD or Nvidia graphics adapter, that is the major reason your CAD programs don't perform well.

Tat means you can see its brand and model/product. Why not buy the SAME existing RAM to mkw sure you get full benefit of dual channels architecture. You can also use   https://www.crucial.com/memory/ddr4/ct8g4sfs824a/ct10583864  but no benefit from dual channels.

Much appreciated! I think this is exactly what I need.

Update..

I purchased and installed a new ram card as suggested and I noticed a slight increase in performance. Since I'm still new to this computer stuff I want to see if this is a normal outcome from modifying a basic laptop's ram.

In the images attached are the old memory speed and the new speed. I also took a picture of the two ram devices installed.

Both samples are just basically idling with a few programs open and running. I tried to see what the max memory usage is and it wouldn't get above 8.8. I will say that the computer runs smoother when using CAD and having large PDFs open. However, it doesn't seem to run much better when just doing day-to-day activities(opening small programs and such).

So my questions are.. Is this an expected outcome? Did I get the right ram? Is there something I need to do to increase the performance, like install a program? Is this the best its going to get with a laptop?

Much appreciated for the assistance!

Hi:

Yes, that is an expected outcome unless your notebook had a higher amount of used memory before you did the upgrade.

The good news is that you have plenty of free memory if needed in the future.

For everyday performance improvement the best upgrade you can make is to replace the 2.5" mechanical hard drive with a better performing 2.5" solid state drive (SSD).

If your notebook did not come with a solid-state drive, I recommend that be your next upgrade.
