Hi Team,
I need to upgrade my laptop with SSD. I already upgraded from 8GB to 16GB RAM but still bootup and normal applications take time to load. Following are details:
Model - HP Envy J-048tx
BIOS updated to latest - F.69
OS - Windows 10 (digital license)
RAM - 16GB
Requirement - NOT gaming. Normal applications but video recording applications like OBS at times which are resource heavy.
Please help me in understanding the difference between :
1. Including a mSata SSD n the Sata Port & installing OS on that. Then using the included HDD as a storage device
vs
Replacing the HDD itself with SSD (but would have to be a smaller size one as I am low on budget).
Are there any performance differences ? Which one would be recommended ?
2. What about capacity of SSD ? Would it make much of a difference if I use 120GB or 240GB or 480GB SSD in the msata port ? What are the specifications to look for while buying a new mSATA SSD ?
3. How is the basic support for this model currently ? By support, I mean whether the charger & battery is available & whether the hardware components are available for replacement incase of damage. I need to know this before spending on it. Else I might have to go for a new one.
4. If I do a clean install on SSD, since this notebook has Win10 digital license, clean install should work flawlessly ?
Thanks a lot!

Please help me in this.
For sake of performance & speed, would it be better to replace SATA HDD with SATA SSD (smaller capacity) or utilise the M.2 port for a SSD & retain the HDD. Install OS on M.2 port SATA SSD.

@rjku1991 In my opinion for better performance, you may want to utilize the M.2 port for a SSD & retain the HDD. Install OS on M.2 port SATA SSD, although, there's a few things you need to understand about upgrades:
Disclaimer: I must let you know that HP does not recommend upgrades or hardware changes as the device is equipped with parts that perform at its optimal performance by design, that said, the upgradeable parts listed by HP articles are purely for your ease, as the decision to upgrade will be at your own discretion.
That out of the way, here's the answer to all your queries:
- In simple terms, since HDD has moving parts, and SSD does not, the SSD is slightly faster than the HDD, but replacing parts is not suggested by HP as mentioned above, hence I'd rather perform the steps mentioned here to improve the system performance.
- The capacity of the drive, really depends on your usage!
- As long as the device is within 4yrs of purchase, all parts to repair/replace will be available within HP, and elsewhere.
- The OS installation on a new drive, if not the same size or type, may cause issues to the license and its also a reason why HP does not support it.
In my personal opinion, I suggest you check with a local tech store before making such changes, just to be on a safer side.

@rjku1991 Since we don't recommend upgrades, I don't have much data on the same, and as I suggested earlier, please get in touch with a local tech to get the answer to such queries,
Good luck!
