I bought this laptop for my son through Costco a few years ago. I want to upgrade it with a ssd. Upon opening the back of the laptop I see that it have a M.2 slot. I have search the forum and have found post of people want to put a ssd in the laptop also. I ran crucial system scan and it says that a PCIE NVME is compatible with this laptop. When i read some of the form people have tried NVME SSD it would not detect it. One post said that this laptop would support M.2 Sata III ssd.
The question i have is I want to either put in a Samsung 860 M.2 Sata iii ssd or Crucial MX500 1TB M.2 Sata iii ssd. I was wondering is there a limit on the size of the ssd. in the document it states 512GB. Would this mean that I am only able to put in 500GB M.2 Sata ssd. I had another question upon looking at the M.2 slot there is only 1 notch in it and I see that the M.2 Sata III have 2 notches I do not see how this will fit in the slot. Please if you could elaborate. I have attached some pictures of the M.2 Slot.
Thank you

Hi:
Crucial and the service manual are incorrect regarding support for NVMe drives in the 15-cc6xx model series.
Only the 15-cc1xx model series support NVMe drives as we have discovered through other forum members trials.
The drive sizes are just what HP offered in the model series, not the maximum capacity supported, so if you want to install a 1 TB M.2 SATA SSD, that would be fine.
I don't know of any HP notebook or desktop PC that has a M.2 slot with two keys. They all look like they would support a NVMe drive but that is not always the case.
Some support SATA only, such as the 15-cc6xx, some support SATA and NVMe, and some support NVMe only.
The SATA notch that is not lined up by the key in the M.2 slot fits just fine.
It does not use the contacts where the cut in the drive is.
I am offering you this 3rd option for a SSD...this one has the best read/write performance for the price, in my opinion...

Hi Paul,
Thank you very much for the confirmation. I had one more question. I was just wondering if it is a good idea to put a heat pad for the ssd on the to help dissipate the heat generated by the ssd.
Thank you

You're very welcome.
I know it would be a good idea if you could affix a thermal pad on a NVMe SSD, because they run hot.
SATA not so much, but it certainly wouldn't hurt if you did.
Heat is the worst enemy of drives.

Hi Paul,
I found two M.2 Heatsink with thermal pads. which one do you think is best
1 copper M.2 heatsink and thermal pad
2 copper M.2 heatsink and thermal pads
