currently my laptop resolution is 1366x768 and the color looks quite awful. Is it possible to upgrade the display to 1080p IPS panel ?

Yes you can upgrade the display but that will void the Hardware warranty of the Notebook.
HP doesn't not recommend upgrading the Display since it is not a customer replaceable part. But you can always do so at your own discretion 😊
You can refer to page 80 in the Service Guide: http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c04402649 for help in replacing the Display
Hope this helps 😊
