1. Can I upgrade my 10+ year old HP / Compaq nx 9420 laptop 17" notebook HDD drive to a SSD?
2. If so, what is the largest, or optimum size SSD I can install?
3. Would I need to change any cables or plugs for this upgrade?
4. Can someone recommend the best SSD hard drive to purchase?
5. Can I then load Windows10 onto the new SSD ... or would Windows7 work better on these older laptops?
6. I would also upgrade to 2 x 2GB RAM memory cards to give me the max permitted on this laptop of 4GB.
7. Is it absolutely imperative to match the correct RAM memeory cards to the laptop 'requirements'?? Please advise on this.
Regards

Welcome to HP Support Forum. The nx and nc series notebooks are very good machines, I loved them that why I'm here.

Q1,2,3, 4, 6 and 7:
A: Yes, it uses SATA connection therefore no need to change cable and the following reliable vendor supplies all you need

A: You can simply create installation media from the following link and install to your machine:
https://www.microsoft.com/en-au/software-download/windows10
Windows 10 will activate itself when you come online.
As you already have Windows 10 and programs on your machine, you can do a fresh install as above or simply clone existing HDD to new SSD; doing this way you don't need to reinstall anything.
Regards.
