That's unfortunate, because at the beginning of this thread, I was led to the impression that eveything would work fine, and all I needed was a caddy for this SSD. If I would have known about this IDE/AHCI-support conundrum before I purchased and used it, I would have picked a different SSD... but it's not so bad. I got it on sale for $30 and I think I've found out how to optimize it with this computer.
You're right, I can only use this SSD as a secondary storage device. So I did one final install. I put /boot, boot loader, swap , /temp, /srv, /opt, and /usr/local partitions on the HDD (I don't think these require as much speed). I put everything else that I know would benefit from speedy reading and writing on the SSD. It has cut my boot speed to about 30 seconds. Thank you for working through this with me. I'll pay more attention to the offered support with my next SSD purchase.

Never my intention to mislead you but this is a bit of a gray art. I think an older SATA-II SSD would work fine it is just impossible to know all the SSDs out there and whether they will work on every platform. Yours is the oldest model series that could work with an SSD so naturally newer SSDs will have issues sometimes.
