Microsoft Windows 11

This is driving me crazy. I have 2 USB ports, they both work fine with my external harddrive. But whenever I try to plug anything else (phone with a usb cable, usb stick / flash drive, my mouse's usb thing, etc.) it just won't work! And the craziest thing is, I have a USB Hub, when I plug it in and put the aforementioned devices, it works just fine!

I have no clue what to do. I tried disabling, uninstalling and reinstalling the USB drivers, Windows in up-to-date, and nothing works. Please help!

Open to any clarifications needed.

Why the Hub Works

  • External Power: The hub might use a wall plug to give extra power to your devices.
  • Signal Reset: The hub cleans up the data signals before they reach your computer.
  • Driver Bypass: The hub uses its own generic chip to talk to your PC first.

Why Direct Connections Fail

  • Power Limit: Your computer ports might not send enough power for phones or flash drives.
  • Driver Errors: Old software drivers get confused when you plug in a new device directly.
  • Port Speed Drop: The port might lock into an old mode that only likes your hard drive.

How to Fix It

  • Update Drivers: Go to your device manager and reinstall your universal serial bus controllers.
  • Check Power Settings: Turn off USB selective suspend in your computer power options.
  • Clean Ports: Look inside the ports for dust or bent metal pins.
