HP Pavilion g6-1347el Notebook PC

hi I have a RX580 that was given to me but not a fixed PC to be able to use it so I thought of connecting it to my Laptop since it has an AMD Radeon HD7450m which has driver problems with Windows 10, I already know what to buy (i'm gonna use the mini PCI-E slot) to do this but I had one question, in the tutorial I saw it was going to force the use of the integrated graphics card but in the bios of my laptop there are 2 options (Fixed) and (Dynamic) fixed disables the dedicated graphics card and Dynamic enables it so it should work by selecting Fixed and choosing (High performance) in windows settings of graphics for apps right?

Hi @OmegTubero,

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Using an external graphics card like the RX 580 with a laptop is possible, but it's a bit more complicated than just connecting it. Here are some key points to consider.

  • Compatibility: Your laptop needs to have an available external graphics card (eGPU) port. Most laptops don't have this, especially older models like the HP Pavilion G6. eGPU support is more common in high-end or gaming laptops released in recent years.
  • eGPU Enclosure: If your laptop supports eGPUs, you'll need to purchase an external graphics card enclosure. This is a box that houses the RX 580 and connects to your laptop through a compatible port like Thunderbolt 3. It also needs its own power supply.
  • Thunderbolt 3: If your laptop has a Thunderbolt 3 port, it's likely compatible with eGPUs. Make sure to check your laptop's specifications to confirm this. If your laptop doesn't have Thunderbolt 3, it might not be compatible with external graphics cards.
  • Drivers and Compatibility: While the RX 580 might be a more capable graphics card compared to the HD 7450M, using an eGPU with a laptop can sometimes be tricky due to driver and compatibility issues. You might need to install specific drivers to ensure the RX 580 works correctly with your laptop.
  • Performance: While an eGPU can significantly improve graphics performance, the performance gain might not be as high as when using it with a desktop PC. This is because the connection between the laptop and the eGPU can introduce some latency and bandwidth limitations.
  • DIY Setup: Setting up an eGPU can be a bit technical. You may need to modify your laptop's BIOS settings, install the correct drivers, and sometimes deal with troubleshooting.
  • Cost: External graphics card enclosures can be expensive, and when you factor in the cost of the enclosure, a powerful graphics card like the RX 580, and any other necessary components, the cost might approach that of a new laptop or desktop.
  • Heat and Cooling: Using a powerful graphics card can generate a lot of heat. Make sure the eGPU enclosure has proper cooling to prevent overheating.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

I saw in some videos people who used the Mini PCI-E Port to connect the eGPU to old laptop you think that can work?
