OMEN by HP 15-dc1030nr
Microsoft Windows 11

So a few days ago i got a warning that my battery needed to be replaced as it was going bad. Fair enough, and thanks for the Heads up HP.

I bough a new battery for $40 and replaced it. Super easy. Works fine (the battery) now. HOWEVER. Ever since i did the swap my fans spin at almost full speed ALL THE TIME. I've tried the easy things like power modes and Balanced plans etc but nothing seems to work. Any thoughts on how to reduce the speed? Even at only 10% CPU usage they whine like mad. (Yes i cleaned them at the time of the battery swap too, so its not that.)  My GPU runs around 50 - 55 C and the CPU is steady at around 60 - 65C

Hi @xenman,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like the fan issue might be related to the battery replacement, though it’s not immediately clear how they would be connected. Here are a few steps you can take to troubleshoot and hopefully resolve the issue.

Update BIOS and Drivers

  • Ensure your BIOS and all relevant drivers (especially chipset and thermal management) are up-to-date. Sometimes, fan issues can be resolved with BIOS updates or driver patches.

Check Fan Settings in BIOS

  • Enter BIOS/UEFI settings during startup (usually by pressing F2, F10, or ESC depending on your model). Look for any fan control options or settings that might have been reset or changed.

Run HP Diagnostics

  • Use the HP Support Assistant or HP Hardware Diagnostics (usually available in BIOS or downloadable from HP’s website) to check if there are any issues detected with the thermal system or fans.

Recalibrate the Battery

  • Sometimes, a battery replacement can cause the system to misjudge power needs. Let the battery drain completely until the laptop shuts down, then fully charge it back to 100% without interruption.

Check for BIOS Battery or CMOS Issues

  • In rare cases, replacing a battery might affect the CMOS battery settings, which can impact system behavior. Consider checking the CMOS battery if applicable.

Reset the BIOS to Default Settings

  • Enter the BIOS settings and look for an option to reset to default settings. Sometimes, this can resolve issues that arise from hardware changes.

Inspect Fan Connections

  • Double-check that the fan connectors were not disturbed or disconnected during the battery swap. Sometimes, improper fan connections can lead to erratic fan behavior.

Review Power Settings

  • Ensure that your power settings in Windows are set correctly. Go to Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options and check the advanced settings for the processor power management. Set the minimum processor state to 5% or lower.

Thermal Paste Reapplication

  • If you are comfortable with it, reapplying thermal paste to the CPU and GPU can sometimes help if the fan noise is due to overheating issues. However, this might not be necessary unless you’ve had the laptop for a while and haven’t done this before.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
