HP Notebook - 15-ba033no
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello!

I have an HP Notebook 15-ba033no and the fan has recently started sounding like a mini chainsaw when I start up the laptop and it's constantly running being very loud, it stopped with the loud noise for a few weeks and then it started again. I've now tried cleaning the fan, I didn't have compressed air to do this so  I used a hairdryer in cool air mode, but it didn't help at all. I've also opened task manager to look at CPU and it's usually at about 4%-10% and then it can go up to 30% or a bit more and it seems like it's mostly google chrome for that, but honestly I don't really know what to look for. I read the suggestions here - https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c01007591  although I don't know if the laptop is warmer than it usually is, but it was the only suggestions I found. The only thing I haven't tried is updating bios, I have F.17, if I were to update that should I just chose the latest update  F.33 Rev.A? Because there are 5 previous versions available that all seem to fix different things, for example previous version F.30 Rev.A were it says " - Provides improved security of UEFI code and variables. HP strongly recommends transitioning promptly to this updated BIOS version which supersedes all previous releases.". Which of them should I chose? Is updating bios complicated? I'm not that skilled with computers, as you can probably tell by my questions...I'm not even sure if I'm asking this question in the right board. When I started my laptop today, the noise was extremely loud , it was so loud that I could hear it in another room. I've had this laptop for almost 3 years, isn't it a bit soon for things to start breaking down?

Welcome to HP forums, I see that you are getting loud fan noise.

For better clarity and to assist you better I would require more information regarding this.

  • Does the laptop shuts down due to overheating?
  • Does it freeze or lockup?

Excess heat will cause the fans to run constantly, damage components, and limit the speed of the CPU. All of these problems with high power and high heat will cause applications to work slower than normal. One of the main functions of the BIOS is to monitor the temperature and adjust the operating conditions. While the sound of the fan running all the time can be annoying, it may be the first clue that your computer is running as efficiently as possible.

Let's start with performing a hard reset on the PC to release any excessive static/power that could have cause the issue.

Turn off the computer.

Disconnect all external connected peripheral devices such as USB storage devices, external displays, and printers.

Unplug the AC adapter from the computer.

Press and hold down the Power button for about 15 seconds to drain any residual electrical charge from the capacitors that protect the memory.

Press the Power button to turn on the computer.

If a startup menu opens, use the arrow keys to select Start Windows Normally, and then press the Enter key.

If the issue persists, I would suggest here to Perform Bios Defaults:

  1. Turn off the computer and wait five seconds.
  2. Press the Power button to start the computer and repeatedly press the F10 key to enter the BIOS setup menu.
  3. On the BIOS Setup screen, press F9 to select and load the BIOS Setup Default settings.
  4. Press F10 to Save and Exit.
  5. Use the arrow keys to select Yes, then press Enter when asked Exit Saving Changes?
  6. Follow the prompts to restart your computer.

For starters please perform all the prescribed steps from these links to try and fix the issue- HP Notebook PCs - Fan is Noisy and Spins Constantly, PC is Warmer than Normal:  https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c01007591

Link 2: reducing heat inside the computer: https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c01657439

I would suggest here is to update the Bios, and Chipset drivers on your PC from our HP support website, using this link or you can install it from HP Support Assistant.

Download and install HP support assistant on your PC. It should automatically download and install the latest updates and drivers for your PC.

Refer this link to know how to use HP support assistant.

If you have followed the steps suggested and still having the issue, I would recommend you go ahead and run an extensive system test from F2(Please capture the failure ID for further assistance).

To thank me for my efforts to help you, please mark my post as an accepted solution so that it benefits several others.

Cheers.

Hi and thank you very much for your reply!

The laptop doesn't shut down due to overheating or freeze or lockup it works completely normal, it's just that the fan is extremely loud and it's not a normal fan sound either, this literally sounds like a tiny chainsaw, its got that choppy motor sound and honestly the noise is kind of driving me nuts. I tried doing a hard reset on the PC to release any excessive static/power as you suggested, but it didn't make any difference. I've also tried all of the suggestions in - "HP Notebook PCs - Fan is Noisy and Spins Constantly, PC is Warmer than Normal" and Link 2: "reducing heat inside the computer" with the exception of updating bios and as I wrote in my inital post I'm not sure which to choose, I have F.17, if I were to update that should I just chose the latest update F.33 Rev.A? Because there are 5 previous versions available that all seem to fix different things, for example previous version F.30 Rev.A were it says " - Provides improved security of UEFI code and variables. HP strongly recommends transitioning promptly to this updated BIOS version which supersedes all previous releases.". Is updating bios complicated ? I've always had HP Support Assistant but it says - no updates available. The CPU is now constantly at around 70%-80%, one of the suggestions in "HP Notebook PCs - Fan is Noisy and Spins constantly was to open task manager and look through the list for suspect processes. But the problem with that is that it sort of only works if you know what 'normal' is supposed to look like. For someone like myself who is not very knowledgable about this, I have no idea what a "suspect process" looks like.

Update: In case anyone else is having the same problem and find my comments here while seaching for a solution, I'm leaving a little update on what worked and what didn't. If you read my comments here, you'll see that I've tried pretty much everything except taking the laptop apart and replacing the fan and nothing helped (I also did end up updating the bios which did nothing), however something did (somewhat) help was doing the same thing this guy in this youtube video did, it didn't complety stop the noise but it's quieter now, here's the link to that video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NqpjcPnIYFA&t=0s&index=4&list=LL3UGeREW3u4sI4yP3nlRIFA

But I suspect that this might be a temporary fix, so when christmas sales come around I'm just going to buy a new....macbook. Becasue I've had this laptop only a few short years, I've used it moderatly and been careful with it...it really should not already be broken.  I regret spending my money on it.
