I tried unsuccessfully to calibrate the battery. HP support was unable to help me. Tried to calibrate it again today, now its says the Batter needs to be replaced. I have a 20 year old Toshiba still running on the original battery. I will never buy another HP product again. Software guy, wrote my first program in 15 minutes, took me 2 1/2 hours t keypunch it. I built my HTPC pcs. I wrote Windows DLLs and today I work as a full stack web developer.

@gmgj, Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I can understand how frustrating this must be especially given your technical background and experience. Let’s try to get to the bottom of this.
You've already attempted calibration multiple times, and now the system is flagging the battery for replacement. This can happen due to a few reasons:
- Battery Wear or Fault: Even relatively new batteries can degrade quickly under certain conditions—especially in gaming laptops where heat and power draw are high.
- Firmware/BIOS Issues: Sometimes, calibration fails due to outdated BIOS or firmware misreporting battery health.
- HP Adaptive Battery Optimizer: This feature can interfere with calibration. You can disable it via BIOS or HP Command Center to see if it helps.
Recommended Steps
Here’s what I’d suggest next:
Run a Battery Report:
- Open Command Prompt as Administrator.
- Type: powercfg /batteryreport
- This will generate a detailed battery health report at:
C:\Users\[YourUsername]\battery-report.html
Use HP UEFI Diagnostics:
- Power off your laptop.
- Tap Esc, then F2 to enter diagnostics.
- Run the Battery Test from there. This is more accurate than the Windows-based tool.
Update BIOS and Drivers:
- Visit the HP Support Page for your model and ensure your BIOS, chipset, and battery firmware are up to date.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

No settings for HP Adaptive Battery Optimizer. Searched HP Support Assistant, User guide and maintenance guide. All components are up to date. Passes all trouble shooters. I could generate the powecfg report. I have tried the UEFI way a couple of times.

I searched the manual and service and repair manual for Adaptive, nothing there. Adaptive Charging is a BIOS setting. I was able to disable the setting in the BIOS, when I reboot and go back into the BIOS menu, its says, you should have adaptive battery on. It you ignore this, it will not show the battery calibration menu. I tired this twice. BTW, the system runs like its got 16GB of memory, The original invoice says 16GB, the system reports 8GB.
