HP Recommended
I bought (or thought I bought) an original HP power adapter from a local reseller, having lost the one I had. However I get the message "HP recommends using an original power adapter from HP" when connecting.
Is there any way to confirm whether or not the power adapter I purchased is indeed original?

That is the correct part number charger for your laptop. I guess it is possible it is damaged (such as the center pin of the plug) or counterfeit but it looks legit from the picture.
Be alert for scammers posting fake support phone numbers and/or email addresses on the community.
