Hello,

I just wanted to confirm that I am buying the correct Memory for my HP Notebook and that going with 8GBx2 is better them one 16gb. Below is the basic specs of my Notebook.

HP Notebook - 15-da0053wm (Serial # [Personal Information Removed])

Standard Memory

4GB

Maximum Memory

32GB

Memory Expansion Slots / Banks

2 Slots

Memory Type & Info

DDR4 PC4-21300 2666MHz Non-ECC SODIMM

System CPU Type

Intel i5-8250U (1.6 GHz)

Here is the link to the Crucial Memory I am going to buy. I am going with 8gb x 2 as I have 2 slots but it is available in one 16 gb.

I appreciate the help !!

Thanks,

Steve

Hi, Steve:

Yes, 2 x 8 GB would perform better than 1 x 16GB if you never plan on maxing out the memory.

That is because the 2 x 8 GB of memory will run in the higher performing dual channel mode.

With one memory chip or two of mismatched capacities, the memory runs in single channel mode.

I think the memory you want to buy should work, but the Crucial memory report lists this kit for your notebook's model series.

Your notebook's processor can't run the memory faster than 2400 MHz anyway.

Thanks for the feed back, Paul. I was pretty sure going with the 2 x 8 would be the best but wasn't sure. I couldn't find my exact notebook at Crucial's site and there scan didn't either, but I must have missed something when searching for it so I figured I would ask here. Is there any logical reason why it came with  one 4 gb of DDR4 PC4-21300 2666MHz Non-ECC SODIMM I  if the processor can't handle it ? Or is it different when only using one of the 2 memory banks? I copied and pasted that info in my OP from my user's manual so I thought it was correct info, or is there something different when using just 1 bank instead or both.  Just curious for my own knowledge as I enjoy learning as much as I can.

I appreciate your help and quick reply !!!

Thank you,

Steve

You're very welcome, Steve.

Most likely HP installed DDR4-2666 MHz memory because that is what they had on hand at the time.

The faster memory automatically bridges to the speed the processor can run the memory at.

Below is the link to the service manual.

Hey Paul,

No, actually I went back at look at the manual and you are correct. Here is what it came with , 4 GB DDR4-2400 SDRAM (1 x 4 GB). I know when downloading the manual there were quite a few with similar models and I downloaded a few before I found the one for my exact model and never deleted the others.

I'm certain your first reply is correct. I also can see your second reply on them using the 2666 if that's what they had. I haven't opened up the Notebook yet so was just going off info I found on here.

Thanks again for your help !!!

Have a great day !!

Anytime, Steve.

Glad to have been of assistance.

You can use the free utility that I zipped up and attached below, and it will show you the memory info for the chip HP installed...speed, manufacturer, etc.

You have a great day too!

Thank you for that info.

Paul,

So I ran the utility you sent me , which is nice to have, and then I looked up the Samsung memory that the utility shows installed and it is 2666 MHz. If I was just adding another 4 gb to get 8 total and didn't run the utility and went with the manual spec of 2400, I am guessing I would have had  issues since it wasn't a match, or would it default to 2400?

Hi:

Yes, it would be best to have memory with matching specs.

But since you are replacing the 4 GB DDR4-2666 MHz chip with two 8 GB chips that will match, that won't be a problem.

If you were just adding a 4 GB chip to the empty slot, then you can get the compatible Crucial 4 GB DDR4-2666 memory chip for the model series.
