I have 4gb ram configuration in my laptop and want to add 8gb DDR3 ram. So total I wamt to increase upto 12gb ram. So would like to know if my laptop supports 12gb ram in combination of 4gb+8gb??

Please help.

Hi:

 

Yes, it will support that configuration, but I recommend that eventually, you remove the 4 GB memory chip and replace it with an 8 GB memory chip.

 

Here's why...

 

Not only will you increase the memory from 12 GB to 16 GB but more important, you will change the way the memory runs from the lower performing single data rate (SDR) mode, to the higher performing dual data rate (DDR) mode.

 

Memory in one slot + empty slot = SDR

Mismatched capacities in both slots (4 GB + 8 GB) = SDR

Matched capacities in both slots (4 GB + 4 GB, 8 GB + 8 GB) = DDR
