- What does an "Infrared sensor board" in a Spectre x360 do?

I have repaired the fans in my old Spectre x360 and have destroyed the connector of the Infrared Sensor Board, L71968-001. It is now not connected anymore. That does not seem to matter at all, no functionality seems to be missing, and the OS also does not complain.
Can anyone tell me what that thing is doing?

It is used to measure heat and either generate a warning or shutdown the system in case of overheating.
Your CPU has on-die thermal protection Possibly the IR sensor is measuring total heat including battery charging.
Possibly charging the battery while doing a zoom session with some apps in background could overheat and damage your system with that sensor not working. Probably should replace it

Thanks, unfortunately the thing that broke is the connector on the main board. I would have to echange the main board.
Im still curious what heat it detects: the placement is very odd, see 25:00 in https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FeTlBWj6cks . The only thing it can measure there is heat coming out of the fans. Maybe it would detect if the exhaust slit is blocked? (Laptop on fluffy cushion and the like.)
At least I am not overly worried, just curious.
