Hello helpful HP commmunity
I have just run the quick diagnostics and got this failure ID on short drive self test :-
94HKPV-7JE99E-XD7WL1-60SL13
please could someone enlighten me as to what it might mean and what the appropriate action might be please?
PS I suspect the Hard drive is on its way out as it has been VERY slow (hence diagnostics) - would it be fairly easy to swap the drive out for a new equivalent type drive,
thank you for your help

Hi:
The meaning of the failure code is: Hard Disk 1 Quick Test Failure
That means the hard drive has failed or is about to fail and needs to be replaced.
If you can still get into windows, copy any files you want to a portable hard drive.
Below is the link to the service manual for your notebook. The hard drive R & R procedures can be found in chapter 6.

To reinstall windows...
To reinstall W10...Use the Media Creation Tool. Make the 64 bit installation media.
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10
You can make a W10 USB flash drive installer using an 8 GB flash drive using another Windows PC, since your PC is not working.
W10 will work with the product key in the BIOS, install and automatically activate once you are connected to the internet.
Here are the steps to create the W10 USB flash drive installer...
- Select Download tool now, and select Run.
- If you agree to the license terms, select Accept.
- On the What do you want to do? page, select Create installation media for another PC, and then select Next.
Select the language, edition, and architecture (64-bit or 32-bit) for Windows 10. You want 64 bit.
- Select which media you want to use:
- USB flash drive. Plug in a blank USB flash drive with at least 8GB of space. Any content on the flash drive will be deleted.
Then you can install the drivers and available software from the PC's support page.

Thank you ever so much Paul for the quick and knowledgeable reply, fortunately I had a small inkling that the HD might be up the creek, I bought a Seagate BarraCuda 2.5" 1TB SATA HD yesterday - hopefully it is compatible with my laptop.....
Now to attempt to install it - I used to be quite techy but now things moved on and I feel like an old woman who knows nothing about computers. I think the last computer I did that sort of replacing etc to , was pre-2000 and probably running Windows 95/98 (when we had discs/CDs) - so fingers crossed.

You're very welcome.
That should work.
It looks a little complicated to open up that notebook.
Just take your time and get a couple of old credit cards you can slip between the case to help open it, after you remove the gazillion screws.
