HP Pavillion DV6 - 2125 TX
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

I currently have 2 RAM slots with 2 GB RAM cards inserted in each. So total is 4GB now.

I want total of 8GB RAM now.

My questions:

1) Should I get 2 cards of 4GB each? Is it mandatory that always both slots should have equal capacity RAM cards?

2) Or Can I remove both 2GB Ram cards & insert one 8 GB card in one slot only?

3) Or Can I just get one card of 4GB RAM and replace any 2GB card in there? so total becomes 6 GB, is this allowed?

(I need to upgrade because I work on Java and I need to use multiple IDEs and it does need higher size RAM)

Thank you for responding,

It's great to have you back 😉

I thought I answered that, my bad, no worries though,

Using a 8GB Ram is better than using 4GB, unless you don't need as much speed as a 8GB would provide,

Basically, if you use the PC for everyday computing you may not need it, however, if its gaming or web-designing you are looking for, please go ahead and get 8GB.

As I understand you want information on upgrading the RAM,

No worries, as I'll be glad to help you, that said, I'll need a few more details to dissect your concern & provide an accurate solution:

Did you check the maintenance and upgrade guide for your device?

Hi @Riddle_Decipher

Thank you so much. But can you confirm ? before I invest on a RAM.

My RAM details:(I have two 2GB RAM cards and I have only 2 slots & both are occupied)

4.00GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 532MHz (7-7-7-20)

I realised this is what is matching for me, do you agree?

● 4096-MB total system memory (4096×1 or 2048×2)

Does your reply mean, i can add one 8GB RAM card in one slot OR I can add two 4GB RAM cards in the two slots that i have?

I heard from crucial.com that, "Although the memory can be installed one module at a time, the best performance comes from using matched pairs of modules."

Does that mean if I use two 4GB RAM cards then it gives me BEST performance than one 8GB RAM?

Please advise.

Thanks a lot in advance.

Regards

Nazia

@believernzt

Thank you for replying with this detailed response,

I appreciate your time and efforts,

You've nailed it! 😉

That's exactly what I meant and yes, you should be able to use a total of 8GB:

  •  8192-MB total system memory (4096×2)

Using matched pairs is the way to get this done.

I hope this answers your query.

Thank you for your response
My last question is.. Whether two 4GB RAM cards give better performance than one 8GB RAM card? I read this somewhere in a blog hence asking.
Thanks in advance.

Hi,

as @Riddle_Decipher is out of the office today, I'm replying to you. You've been fabulous to work with considering your superb technical skills, remarkable patience and great attitude. Kudos to you for that.

I suggest you to go with DDR3. There is no mention about DDR4 memory for this laptop.

Hope this helps. Cheers! 🙂

Which slot should Insert 8gb ram? The one below or the one top?
I inserted in the one below.. It's fitted properly but I see optional blue screen on start up.. It's asking me to fix hardware or start up windows..
Please advise
