Dear supporters,

I have an older laptop that was working fine with older versions of Win, but with Win 10 it is very slow, so I would like to increase the RAM memory, but I am not certain.

See below the main details and my questions.

Model: HP PAVILION DV6 Laptop
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 10 (64-Bit)
Processor: AMD A6-3430mx APU with Radeon(tm) HD Graphics, 1.70GHz

Ram SLOT1- 2GB 2Rx8 PC3-10600S (8 chips on each side, KINGSTON)

RAM SLOT 2- 2GB 2Rx8 PC3-8500S-710-F1 (8 chips on each side,  unknown manufacturer,)

1. What is the maximum RAM limit, and of what frequency?
2. Should I consider any specific combination?

Hi:

Chapter 1, page 5 of the service manual indicates the max memory is 2 x 4 GB of DDR3-1333 MHz.

c02842252.pdf (hp.com)

I would try and match up the memory specs 4 GB DDR3-10600 (1333 Mhz), 2R x 8.

8 little black memory chips on each side of the circuit board.

I don't recommend using DDR3L-1600 memory because it may not bridge to 1066 MHz, and 1333 MHz memory will.

Hi Paul,

Hope all goes well for you and the team.

I finally managed to get 2 x 4GB DDR3 Kingston RAM (2Rx8 PC3-10600S-9-10-F20), and installed them already.

I am NOT impressed how the Laptop performs now :p, but is definitely better than before.

What is though an inconvenient, is that every time I switch ON the laptop, after Windows is booting and I start doing stuff, it freezes and recovers in some tenths of seconds.

Would you recommend any other check how I can find out why is freezes? I mean, even before, with the total of 4GB RAM, was really slow but never freeze under this scenario.

Thank you for your continuous support.

Best regards,

ROMACIO

Hi Paul,

Thanks again for your support.

I managed to install as you recommended (instead of 2 x 2GB), 2 identical RAM cards x 4GB KINGSTON 2Rx8 PC3-10600S-9-10-F20.

All is in general "moving" faster, however after Windows is booting and I start working on the laptop, every time the laptop freezes for some tenth of seconds. After it recovers and I can continue using it under normal conditions.

Would you have any opinion about that?

Just for the sake of clarity:

- HP DV6 Pavilion laptop with 2 x 2GB RAM - runs really slow

- after installation of 2 x 4GB - it runs faster, but freezes shortly after Windows has booted.

Looking forward for your thoughts.

Best regards and thank you in advance.
