I opened my case to replace the main battery and noticed a large empty space next to the battery (under the lower right corner of top cover.) What is this space reserved for?

Also, I noticed that there is a CR 2032 battery. Should I replace it? My laptop is 6-7 years old. What is this battery for?

Thanks

Hi @jammy54

I am not sure what exactly you refer to with regards to the empty space. You can check your PC model's service guide here >> http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c05098448.pdf

Concentrate on page 17 (Computer major components) to get an idea what should be where. If any doubts after that, please take pictures and post back with details.

With regards to the CR2032 battery - this is your RTC battery (real time clock battery, also known as CMOS battery) -> https://www.hp.com/us-en/shop/tech-takes/what-is-cmos-battery-how-to-remove-and-replace

Check the guide again (page 32-40) RTC battery section

Yes, it is a good idea to buy a new one same type and replace it if it is that old 6-7 years. Note that your PC will reset your BIOS/UEFI settings to default ones when you remove your old battery.

If your current settings re. BIOS mode [UEFI/BIOS legacy CSM] and boot type [UEFI or legacy] are non-standard, Windows might fail to boot eventually. You will need to go to BIOS (F10) and re-configure them to the way they are now to make Windows boot again.

Hope this helps.
