i have an hp elitebook 840 g1 and i want to upgrade my storage and buy m.2 ssd, so how to know what kind of m.2 should i get whether it is SATA m.2 or NVMe m.2 ?

It needs a 42 mm SATA M.2 with B + M keys like this:

 

42 mm SATA-3 M.2 SSD42 mm SATA-3 M.2 SSD

This is shorter than the most common M.2 SSDs currently offered but these can still be found. HP offered up to a 120 gig from the factory but you can go larger.

Thesae also tend to be a bit more expensive per gig than current new devices but there are deals if you look hard enough:
