I am currently using an HP Laptop 15 DW2006ni and I'd like to replace my current HDD with an Samsung 980 3.0 NVME M.2 500GB SSD. My question is will my M.2 port be able to take advantage of the higher read/write speeds of an NVME SSD or can my hardware only support SATA speeds?

Your notebook should be able to support high read and write speeds to the SSD.
NVMe SSD M.2 storage devices are compatible with your notebook's system board and BIOS.

Considering what was installed ( a legacy Hard disk) as an original storage device, anything above 1500 MB/s will seem like blistering speed.
You won't believe that it is the same notebook.
You can check the storage device bandwidth after you have the new M.2 SSD installed.
Until then, the transfer speed question is a bit of a moot point.

Hi, @dxnel_t01
To answer your question regarding what the max speed of your notebook's M.2 slot is, the answer is since the slot is PCIe Gen 3, the most you will get out of it would be 3500 MBPS.
In other words, if you wanted to buy a PCIe Gen 4 SSD, it would be limited to a max of 3500 MBPS.
See the intel specs on your notebook's processor:
Intel Core i31005G1 Processor 4M Cache up to 3.40 GHz Product Specifications
I'd go with either a Samsung 980 (not Pro) SSD or a Western Digital Blue SN570.
