@Wozzamatta,

Well, several legit secondary sources such as: HP HP 15-ay038ca | SSD Upgrades | crucial.com and: HP Pavilion Notebook 15-ay038ca Memory RAM Upgrades - Low Cost Delivery & Guaranteed Compatible | Mr... all claim that your laptop is capable/compatible with an 8GB RAM stick.

Of course, the 'maxcapacity' result is compelling, but what I would propose is that you try out an 8GB RAM stick anyway via an eCommerce site that would make it easy to return the RAM stick and to get your money back if it doesn't work out, such as this purchase example via Amazon-Australia: Timetec 8GB DDR3L / DDR3 1600MHz (DDR3L-1600) PC3L-12800 / PC3-12800(PC3L-12800S) Non-ECC Unbuffered....

Btw, please check if your Windows version is 64-bit in order to allow an 8GB RAM stick in the first place: Scan your Computer System & Memory RAM | Mr Memory®.

Kind Regards,

@Wozzamatta,

Welcome to our HP Community forum!

The single RAM slot in your HP 15-ay038ca can be fitted with up to an 8GB DDR3 PC3-12800, 1600 MHz, Non-ECC, SODIMM, 204-pin RAM stick.

Many thanks for this prompt response. After posting this question, I stumbled across a Youtube video that suggested using the following command prompt

wmic memphysical get maxcapacity

The result it gave was that the maximum capacity is 4GB.

Another Youtuber suggested using a free scan available on crucial.com, which I did. Unfortunately it couldn't even find a match.

I don't have enough technical knowledge to know whether the command prompt could assume that 4GB is the maximum because there is only one slot with 4GB in it, whereas you're suggesting that it an be swapped out for an 8GB stick.

Are you certain that this can be done (as in do you know of instances where it has been done successfully)?

Again, thanks for helping out with this.

@Wozzamatta,

You are very welcome!

If you don't mind, please follow up with the result of trying out the 8GB RAM stick.

Warm Regards,
