I'm looking to upgrade my SSD from 256GB to 1TB and I want to know the maximum SSD speed my laptop can support.

Sorry...I guess I better go back to school and take a reading refresher course because clearly I didn't read your question right.

 

Your notebook's M.2 NVMe slot is PCIe Gen 3.0.

 

A gen 4 SSD will work but it will not run at its maximum advertised read/write speeds.

 

This chart shows the maximum transfer speeds the various PCIe slot generations provide.

Chapter 1 of the service manual indicates that HP offered NVMe SSD's up to 1 TB in the model series, so what you want to do should be no problem at all.

The Crucial SSD report indicates that they sell NVMe SSD's up to 4 TB for the model series:
