Hi:

Below is the link to the service manual.

NB_MSG_Pirates_1_0_931980-001 (manualslib.com)

Chapter 1 has the memory upgrade info.

According to the manual, the max memory is 2 x 8 GB of DDR4-2400.

Since your notebook has an Intel i7-7700HQ processor, it should be able to support 2 x 16 GB of DDR4-3200 memory.

You can run this command to see how much memory your notebook can support:

1. In the search box, search for cmd and click Run as administrator.

This will open the command prompt.

2. Once the command prompt is opened, type wmic memphysical get maxcapacityEx and hit enter.

There, it will show the maximum RAM capacity your PC's motherboard can support.

The capacity is shown as Kilobytes, so you have to convert it to Gigabytes by dividing the number provided in the report by 1,048,576.

Thank you a lot for the response, because when I read somewhere else it said the max I could get was 16 gb 2400 mhz as well. No harm in getting faster ram though I guess

You're very welcome.

Usually DDR4-3200 memory is easier and cheaper to find nowadays, but the memory will not run any faster than 2400 MHz, which is the fastest speed your notebook's processor can run the memory at.

If you decide to upgrade the memory to DDR4-3200, it should be CL22, so it bridges to the right DDR4-2400 CL17 timing.

HP Recommended

Oh could you explain that  a bit more? The bridging part you just mentioned?

HP Recommended

Your notebook's processor can only run the memory at a max speed of 2400 MHz.

Intel® Core™ i7-7700HQ Processor

When you install memory that is faster than 2400 MHz, such as 2666 or 3200, it will automatically bridge/downclock to 2400 MHz.

It will not run at 3200 MHz, and it will work the same as if you installed a DDR4-2400 chip in there.

So I did as you said and checked with CMD. CMD says I can use 32 gb's. The manual says 16 max. So if I do get 32 gb's will I be able to use the whole capacity?

HP Recommended

Yes.

Others have upgraded that model series with 2 x 16 GB of memory, but I could not find any of those posts reporting it.

I tried.

Thank you a lot for your help. Hope my questions weren't too repetitive. Wishing you good health. Have a nice day
