Hello!
My dv7-6b63us is quite old but I was wondering if i could squeak some more life out of it by getting the max(16) ram (currently have 6) and upgrading the WIFI.
The Wifi is the most important because It keeps dropping the internet intermittently. 802.11b/g/n WLAN with WiDi (36)
I saw in another post that someone recommended HP Part # 710661-001 is this still a good option?
I Love all you sexy nerds who answer these questions ❤️

@Jenna84 I hate to rain on any parades but I have good news and bad news for you. Yes since you have a Quad Core i7 2nd gen CPU you can run 16 gigs (a pair of 8 gig modules) if DDR3-1333 SO-DIMM. That is 1.5 volt older DDR3 memory. The Manual confirms this when it says 16 gigs is the max and offers an HP Part number for eight gig modules:
Memory modules (2, DDR3, 10600, 1333-MHz)
8 GB (for use only with computer models equipped with an Intel processor) 634091-001
The Timetec brand is the amazon house brand and is made by Hynix which is equivalent to original HP OEM memory. And is sold at fair prices.
On the wi-fi I have less wonderful news. Your laptop is subject to the dreaded whitelist that is going to block the use of any wireless card not listed in the Service Manual-see above. 710661-001 is not going to be compatible and if you put that module in the laptop it will refuse to boot past an error message. If you absolutely must have 802.11ac wifi then a usb wifi dongle is a good choice.
Post back with any more questions and please accept as solution if this is the info you needed.

A wifi dongle! that is perfect didn't realize that was an option... So this is great news on both fronts.
I am thinking to save money I might just go with one 8 gig stick. I am assuming that to have 6 GB now, it must be a 4GB and a 2GB in there now. SO would it be ok to do 4GB and 8GB. Should the 2 sticks be the same GB, I think i remember someone telling me that one time.
If the one 8GB stick is cool then i can fix the WIFI and double my RAM for just $42

Thank you so much!

I would say you will get a much better experience even if you just get rid of the 2 gig and replace it with a 4 gig. 8 gigs running in dual channel will perform just as well as 12 in single channel on most applications.
