Hi,
It supports both M2 SATA3 and much faster M2 PCIe NVMe SSDs. So, the best choice is the M2 PCIe NVMe.
On page 43 of service manual you can see the steps to replace the drive
http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c05493193
It will give a great boost in everyday performance of the PC.
Hope it helps,
David

I did upgrade successfully with "Samsung 970 EVO Plus 500 GB NVMe M.2 Internal SSD (item model number MZ-V7S500BW)",
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07MFBLN7K
The specification suggest up to 256 GB NVMe but. for me even 500 GB NVMe M2 is working fine.
I did struggel with screw required to secure other end of the SSD, as in my laptop there was no screw provided.
After upgrade, ensure boot drive is enabled from NVMe M2 SSD. Overall performance has really improved.
