I'm trying to replace the DVD drive in a hp 2000-416dx. Unfortunately I don't actually have the computer with me because this is for a client who's travelling at the moment. The specs page just says "Supermulti DVD drive" I'd love to know what the model number is and also how I can tell what drives are compatible with it.
I know there's probably a lot of sata dvd drives that will fit in there but I'd also like to make sure the color and bezel match smoothly.

Not just any. It has to be the right thickness. In this case it takes a 12.7mm tray load optical drive. You have to remove the front face plate and any mounting hardware like the caddy and any adapter plates from the original drive and replace with a generic bare drive. Like hard drives, optical drives are generic with industry standard connections. Pages 40-42 of the Service Manual show a good part of the procedure:
If you just want a DVD-RW drive (DVD reader and burner) generic ones are sold on eBay and are fairly inexpensive.
You can even upgrade to a Blu-Ray reader or burner.
You can find youtube videos showing how to swap face plates over to make the new one look just like the old.
Post back if you need any more info and please accept as solution if this is the info you needed.

HP may use third party parts but HP always use part number for each single part or a set of parts. Part number for Optical Disk Drive SATA DVD Read Write of HP 2000-416dx is 659879-001
