I have a HP Notebook 15-db0011dx  with Windows 10 Home 64-bit.  I have to replace my hard drive because I am getting a failure code.  Please list the compatible and upgrade hard drive I will need for my notebook.  I am about 50/50 knowledgeable about computer problems.  Please list the easy and all terms.  I believe getting the right hard drive will be the hardest thing about replacing the hard drive.  Please list all information I will need to get a replacement hard drive.

Hi:

What I recommend you do is to replace the failed 1 TB mechanical hard drive with a better performing 1 TB solid state drive (SSD).

Either of these two models should work...the Samsung has slightly faster write speeds.

Below is the link to the service manual where you can find the hard drive removal and replacement procedure.

After you replace the drive, you can use the HP cloud recovery tool and a 32 GB USB flash drive to create a bootable USB recovery drive that will reinstall W10, the drivers and the software that originally came with your notebook.

Here is an info link for how to use the utility.

You can download the software from the Microsoft Store.

You will have to use the utility on another PC, so you will need to enter your notebook's product number in the tool's search window in order to proceed to make the recovery media.

Your PC's product number is:  4BS28UA#ABA

Please give me the specs for the original hard drive also.

You can google the HP part number of the 1 TB hard drive from chapter 3, page 27 of the service manual's parts list, and it should provide the details, or you can remove the drive from the notebook and find the model number, etc, from the label.

The hard drive does not come with the operating system installed?  I will have to install it.  Right?

That is correct.

That is why I gave you the complete instructions and download link for how to use the HP cloud recovery tool on another PC to create the bootable USB recovery media.

You can re-read my first reply again for more details.

Does the failure ID code 301 mean that your hard drive is failing and needs to be replaced or can it be something else?  I have been getting this failure code for several months when I turn on my notebook every day but it is still working with no problem.  Can I do anything to rule out the fact that the failure code is not coming from a failed hard drive?

You can try a disk repair and see if that helps.

Otherwise, you can keep using the notebook until the drive quits working.

Just make sure if you choose that option that you have your files backed up.

It is not a matter of if a hard drive will fail, but a matter of when.
