HP Laptop 15-dy2018ca
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi, i got a new HP Laptop 15-dy2018ca. I'm planning to partition the Hard drive and make it dual boot machine with Windows and Linux. However when i boot it using a bootable Windows USB key to install OS, hard drive is not listed in available drives.
One option is given is to provide the device drivers however i could not find the device drivers on HP support site and i don't know the Manufacturer of the Hard drive.

Type of hard drive listed in the specifications is 512 GB PCIe® NVMe™ M.2 SSD.

Can someone direct me to where i can find the device drivers for this type of Hard drive.

Hi, @manaseer

W10 does not have the storage controller drivers needed to 'see' the drives in any PC with an Intel 11th gen core processor.

See the info at the link below.

https://support.hp.com/us-en/product/hp-15-f2000-laptop-pc-series/35900344/model/35900346/document/c...

Here is the link to the driver you need...

This package contains the Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver for the supported notebook models and operating systems. The Intel Rapid Storage Technology is designed to provide functionality for the Intel Storage Controllers. The driver improves Serial ATA (SATA) disk performance with Native Command Queuing.

https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp111501-112000/sp111776.exe

There is something that I don't understand in that document, and that is where HP tells you to right click on the Intel driver file and select Extract to

When I ran through the steps, I don't get an Extract to option when I right click on the file.

No doubt you will have the same issue, so download and install the free 7-zip file utility from the link below.

The 2nd file at the top of the page is for 64 bit.

7-Zip (7-zip.org)

Then you can right click on the exe file, select 7-Zip from the menu, and select Extract to: and let it extract the file into its folder name (sp111776), and copy that folder to your USB flash drive, and continue with the instructions.

@manaseer -- try this to your existing Windows installation:

  1. hold-down the "Windows" key (bottom left of your keyboard).
  2. tap the "R" key.
  3. release both keys.
  4. into the window that opens, type diskmgmt and press Enter.
  5. use this utility to "shrink" the "C:" partition, to create unassigned disk-space, for your other operating system to use.

I hope this helps.

There is no need for a driver
Make a backup of your system ! (Macrium)
Some backup tools can't handle dual boot systems!
Safe your BCD!

The right command is: diskmgmt.msc

@VH2000 -- The right command is: diskmgmt.msc

I have found that entering only diskmgmt is sufficient to launch the app.

As Windows searches your disk-drive, it will find the "diskmgmt.msc" file, and it does launch it.

@Paul_Tikkanen --  There is something that I don't understand in that document, and that is where HP tells you to right click on the Intel driver file and select Extract to  When I ran through the steps, I don't get an Extract to option when I right click on the file.

The "context" menu shows "Extract" when you second-mouse-button-click on a ".zip" file.

That option is not shown when it is an ".exe" file, unless, of course, you have previously installed some "unzipper" software package that adds "Extract to" to the context menu.  Obviously, the author of the document had installed some third-party package, to add that functionality.

Just launch that ".exe" file.  Even on a non-HP, non-Windows-10, system, it will run.

It will let you name a folder to be the target.

By default, it creates a sub-folder inside the "C:\SwSetup" folder on your disk-drive.

When the "unzipping" is complete, "quit" from the next step of the installer, and browse that new folder.

When you prepare a backup/recovery boot medium it might be necessary to inject the drivers also to that medium. Check that!
