Your laptop supports both types of M.2 SSDs. This discussion below may be of help. I suggest you open the bottom cover to figure out which form factor of M.2 SSD is required by the M.2 slot in your laptop. It may be 2242 or 2260 but not 2280.

Actually, it's both, 2260 or 2242, as seen here: https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Software-and-How-To-Questions/elitebook-840-g2-m-2-ssd-size-a... 

For PCIe drives, 2242 will probably be the only option....
