Thanks for the information. I also did a lot of research after you gave me more details. I believe even though the stock SSD the laptop came with has an M.2 interface, it's connected via SATA since there appears to be a bottleneck capping it at a SATA-level read/write speed. I looked at the System Information and this confirmed it. So I was wondering if I can figure this out without removing the foot strips and opening the laptop just yet ----- does that mean the Samsung SSD I have doesn't occupy the same space that the new SSD I hope to purchase would? (The new one would likely be one of the four M.2 NVMe with PCIex4 SSD's listed earlier unless I find a better deal.)
My question is because I'm wondering how I'm going to do the cloning of my data from the old SSD to the new SSD. If the laptop fits both then I can clone it with no problem, but if the old occupies the spot where the new would go, then I suspect I'd have to figure out how to do it another way. What are your thoughts on this? Should I assume that it's in a different spot since the old is a SATA and the new would be via NVMe?

If the original SSD is an M.2 type it connects to a PCIe slot and that will be the same one you will install the new SSD to after cloning is successfully completed.
I use an external enclosure adapter that is USB 3.1 Type-C to M.2 internal interface. My M.2 SSD products are NVMe Samsun.
See the products at the Newegg.com link in the line below this one.

There is software available for cloning from the installed SSD to the external adapter's M.2 SSD.
