Hello everybody.

I am back with a question of upgrading a laptop HP Pavilion G7-2257sf. As it is out of date, I could not find the full caracteristics of the RAM on HP site.. Before you ask, I went to Crucial and ran  their software to analyse my laptop. They proposed to upgrade with this : https://www.amazon.fr/dp/B005LDLV6S?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details

I found the strip, bought and installed it. It looked sooooo close to the orignal one installed on my laptop which is :

HYNIX 4GB 2Rx8 PC3 - 12800S - 11-11-F3   HMT351S6CFR8C - PB N0 AA 1234

Pheewww..

I

Well, once installed, the new Crucial DDR3L did not seem to be compatible. I had a very quick (no time to read) message on a black screen mentionning BIOS and it was gone. Never could start again, showed something like 'repair" and back to black....for ever.

I removed the new Crucial RAM strip right away and brought my laptop back to life.  Now I am trying to find the exact copu  of the installed original HYNIX strip but the closest I could find is this one : https://www.amazon.fr/Hynix-DDR3L-1600MHz-module-m%C3%A9moire/dp/B00FKEZ218   what bothers me is : ".... 12800S-11-12-B4"    instead of "...11-11-F3" and "1334" instead of "1234".

Could this new HYNIX one be compatible with the existing one ?

thanks in advance for your good advice.

Enjoy your day !

Hi:

Chapter 3 of the service manual indicates that the 4 GB HP memory part number is 621569-001.

ManualsLib - Makes it easy to find manuals online!

That part number could be assigned to several different compatible memory manufacturers.

It just depends on what HP had on hand at the time.

Maybe you would want to do a search by the HP part number and buy a 4 GB memory chip that references that part number.

For example, you can find a few on eBay.Fr for sale.

This one has the HP part number label on the memory chip, and it was the least expensive one I could find.

Hi Paul,

I took some time to reply because I followed step by step what you said.

  • Let's forget about ManualsLib , they don't have my model of laptop. Could find it nowhere else on the net.
  • I went to check the spare part you mention : the ones they suggest do not differ from the one I have bought and they do not mention any "L" version as incompatible. But it is as you will see below.
  • I removed the new memory chip out, cleaned the slot contacts with pulsed air. Put it back in. As a result, the  PC booted !!!! I thought 'good, you made it'. But I could see (and I cannot explain it) that both analysers Speccy's and Crucial's  recognise it as 8 GB single channel but the system does not use it and still shows 4GB with one available empty slot.  Worse of all: the laptop was running so slowly that it was just a nightmare.
  • I browsed the net to understand what the problem was : it seems that for that chipset/motherboard, having DDR3 and DDR3L working together is impossible. The difference of voltage between both chip versions is a problem.
  • That's when I realized I had ordered from Amazon a DDR3 chip but was delivered a DDR3L chip.  So I removed the DDR3L for good, returned it to Amazon and ordered a set of 2 x 4GB DDR3. I will receive them when I am back next week-end and I will replace the existing one by the new set of 2.
  • Now I cross my fingers that the delivery will stick to the description. !!

So again, thanks to your expertise and help, I might solve my problem soon. One step at a time, that's how I learn in the computer tech business...hahaha

Wishing you a good week-end.

Hi Paul,

As promise, this is the update. I am back home. In the meantime I received the chip I ordered from Ebay with the link you gave me. I have just installed it and oh miracle! It works fine! My use rate of memory is now only about 50% whereas before it was flirting with 100% all the time. So my computer is now much faster when browsing or exploring my files.

Truly you have been of a great help and you have given me the best advice for my additional chip.

I sincerely thank you for your help and which you a good week-end.

Glad to have been of assistance and it is good to know that you were able to upgrade the memory in your notebook.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend too!
