My laptop is less than a month old and I see that the battery life does not last more than an hour. I would like to know the reason if my battery health is at 95%.

Hi @Anderson_jl,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

A battery that lasts less than an hour on a new HP laptop, especially when the battery health is still at 95% is definitely not normal and deserves a closer look. Let’s break down what might be happening and how to fix it.

Why This Might Be Happening

Even with good battery health, poor battery life can be caused by:

1. High Background Power Usage

  • Copilot+ features, AI tasks, or background apps may be draining power.
  • Check for high CPU/GPU usage in Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc).

2. Display Settings

  • Your 2K H display consumes more power than standard FHD screens.
  • If brightness is high or the refresh rate is set to 120Hz+, battery life will drop fast.

3. Driver or Firmware Issues

  • Outdated graphics or chipset drivers can cause power management bugs.
  • HP’s preinstalled drivers may not be optimized for battery efficiency.

4. Windows Power Plan

  • If set to “Best Performance”, the system prioritizes speed over battery life.
  • Switch to “Balanced” or “Best Power Efficiency” under Settings > Power.

What You Can Do Right Now

1. Run HP Battery Check

Use HP’s built-in diagnostics:

2. Check Battery Report

You can generate a detailed battery usage report:

  1. Open Command Prompt as Administrator
  2. Type: powercfg /batteryreport
  3. Open the generated HTML file and check:
    • Design Capacity vs Full Charge Capacity
    • Recent usage patterns
    • Drain rate per session

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
