Why does the keyboard not work when I shut down and turn on the laptop after updating Windows? To fix it, I need to restart the laptop. How do I fix this problem?

Hi @dilanjana,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your laptop keyboard stops working after a cold shutdown and power-on (right after a Windows update), but it starts working again if you do a Restart.
This often happens due to driver or power-management issues after Windows updates.
Let’s go step by step.

1. Turn Off Fast Startup

Windows’ Fast Startup can sometimes prevent devices like the keyboard from initializing properly after a full shutdown.

Open Control Panel → Hardware and Sound → Power Options → Choose what the power buttons do.

Click Change settings that are currently unavailable.

Uncheck Turn on fast startup (recommended).

Click Save changes.

Shut down and turn on the laptop to see if the keyboard now works without needing a restart.

2. Update or Roll Back the Keyboard Driver

Right-click Start → Device Manager.

Expand Keyboards.

Right-click your keyboard (e.g., “Standard PS/2 Keyboard”) and choose:

Update driver → Search automatically for drivers, or

If the problem started right after an update, choose Properties → Driver → Roll Back Driver.

Restart the laptop and test.

3. Update the Chipset / I/O Drivers

Sometimes the issue is with the chipset or embedded controller drivers.

Go to your laptop manufacturer’s support site.

Download and install the latest Chipset / I/O / Hotkey / Keyboard drivers for your exact model and Windows version.

Restart the laptop after installation.

4. Check for Windows Updates

Go to Settings → Windows Update → Check for updates.

Install any pending updates, especially optional hardware/driver updates.

Restart and test again.

5. BIOS / UEFI Update

If the issue persists:

Visit your laptop manufacturer’s support page.

Check if a newer BIOS/UEFI firmware is available that addresses keyboard or power-on issues.

Follow the official instructions carefully to update BIOS/UEFI.

6. Test in Safe Mode

To rule out third-party software conflicts:

Hold Shift and click Restart → Troubleshoot → Advanced options → Startup Settings → Restart → Press 4 (Safe Mode).

Shut down and power on the laptop while in Safe Mode to see if the keyboard works.

If it works in Safe Mode, the problem may be caused by a startup program or third-party driver.

I hope this helps.
