Compaq Presario CQ56-110US
Linux

According to the Compaq Presario Maintenance and Service Guide matrix on page 2, (http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c02657369), my Compaq Presario CQ56-110US laptop supports up to 8 GB of system memory but in the next few rows down of the guide, it lists configuration info that maxes out a 4GB total. If I remove the 2 existing memory chips (1GB each) and install two 4GB chips, will my laptop support the upgrade to 8GB?

Hi:

Unfortunately, your model will not support 2 x 4 GB of memory.

That is because with an Intel Celeron processor, your notebook has the Mobile Intel GL-40 chipset.

That chipset only supports a max of 2 x 2 GB of memory.

Besides...2 x 4 GB of DDR2 memory would cost a lot of money.  This was the cheapest I could find.

Many thanks for the prompt reply. Your answer is very valuable. I've found 2 x 2GB chips at around $20 -$40 so your answer saved me about $100, a lot of time and a lot of aggravation I'm sure.

Thanks again,

You're very welcome.

Yes, the 2 GB modules are still cheap, but I guess so few notebooks could run with the 4 GB chips, they didn't make many of them and now they are sky high in price.

I have two HP notebooks that could use that memory, but when I bought it several years ago, it was about $65 for 2 x 4 GB.

It is about double that price now.
