having to guess is not a great option

When logged into Windows, hold down the Windows key and tap the R key once.
That will open the Windows run dialogue
Type in msinfo32 and press enter.
The ninth line is the System SKU and the HP product number. Kindly post it in your next reply in your thread.
The System SKU/Product ID will enable us to determine the hardware configuration of your notebook.

Is the SSD a 2.5" format or M.2?
You did not specify and I am not certain your systemboard version has suport for M.2 SSD products.
Whenever we talk SSD or HDD products that is a need to be very specific so we will be on the same page.
I suspect the issue is that you have tried to use a (Pro) Enterprise grade SSD in a laptop that probably only has support for value SSD products. Even the Samsung EVO Plus may give you the same issue without prepping it to have a GPT volume.
You may need to boot to a Windows installer and use the Command line to pre the SSD with the DiskPart utility.
Otherwise these are compatible.

In that case, I would replace it with an M.2 2280 1TB SATA III TLC .
That Team Group M.2 SSD is a value level SSD product.
Here on Amazon are some inexpensive value level Team Group SATA3 TLC M.2 SSD products that should be simple to install. One of them is a Team Group MS30 2TB M.2 2280 SATA III TLC SSD from the same model as the one you already have. You can't go wrong with that one.
