g7-2217cl
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have never changed a hard drive so am needing to know what will fit in my HP Pavilion g7-2217cl

I'm confused on the 2.5 and 3.5 inch and not sure what will work.

Seagate 1TB BarraCuda SATA 6Gb/s 128MB Cache 2.5-Inch 7mm Internal Hard Drive (ST1000LM048)

Seagate 1TB BarraCuda SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5-Inch Internal Hard Drive (ST1000DM010)

Also is the Seagate drive good quality? I don't have to have 1TB so don't mind getting a 500 GB Western Digital if I can keep the price to around $50.

Also when I install the new hard drive do I need anything special to get it running Windows? I don't have install disks but can put the Windows 8/10 ISO on a USB.

It originally had W8 and I had upgraded to W10.1. I assume logging into my Microsoft account will be enough to activate Windows.

Hi:

2.5" hard drives are for notebook PC's and 3.5" hard drive are for desktop PC's.

It would be physically impossible to fit a 3.5" hard drive in your model.

So you want the 1st link you posted.

Yes, Seagates are good quality hard drives.

Since you had previously upgraded to W10, just make your own W10 installation media (bootable flash drive or DVD), using the media creation tool at the link below.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

When you get to the part of the installation script where you are asked to enter a product key, you select the 'I don't have a product key' option, and W10 will install and automatically activate once you are reconnected to the internet.

Here is the link to the service manual to assist you in replacing the hard drive...see chapter 4.

Thanks for the reply. Sounds like I'm good to go.

You're very welcome.

If you are missing any drivers after W10 installs, just use the latest ones on your notebook's support page, which normally will work on W10.
