Microsoft Windows 11

when I try to update Win 11 from 23H2 to 24H2 (or 25H2) I always get Error 0xC1900101 - 0x40017, installation failed in the SECOND_BOOT phase. I have done the install via the IOS, have also unplugged everything, have no other virus checker than Defender, have basically followed all the steps given. Microsoft help line says this is an HP problem. Can I update to 25H2? This is an HP laptop, 15-dw3053dx.

There are drivers on your system that are blocking the upgrade.

You need to find out what the drivers are and remove them as was done here.

One possible way (I am guessing) is to do a factory restore and then find and run "setup.exe" from the Microsoft 25H2 USB ISO.  This assumes that the original HP drivers will not cause an upgrade failure.  When you run that setup.exe you are doing in inplace upgrade and HP drivers will not be replace by generic Microsoft ones.  Do not boot the USB as it will remove all the factory software.

Possibly you can restore your PC to the original factory software. Even if you do not want to you should keep a copy in the event it is needed.  Expand the spoiler for instructions

Spoiler
HP is removing cloud recovery for system over 5 years old. The actual wording is a limited time after the warranty expires. You may want to get a copy of the cloud recovery before it is too late.

Cloud recovery provides all the custom HP drivers.
Go here and enter your product ID including the 3 characters after the # character. If you have cloud recovery you can restore your system using a 64gb flash.
It may take an hour or more to create the recovery USB. Alternately, download from the MS windows store. Click here for instructions.

Many commercial or "business" laptops have an alternate recovery tool different from that cloud.

Possibly the problem drivers can be located by continuing this discussion and supplying the required files.  It is possible the drivers causing the problem are not HP but might be NVidia,AMD or a 3rd party.
